Week 26 – David Brezinski

Boston Marathon 2023?

Well, 2023 is stacking up to be a very exciting year! Of course, my black belt test and should I pass, it will be an accomplishment for me, like no other. I have written this before but I do see some parallels in training in karate and running a marathon; it is about being able to hold it together (mentally and physically) and go the distance.

I have a love for running. I have never been the fastest and there are other levels of running and duration sport that I have not yet pursued (e.g. Ultra’s), but there is something about being in an individual mental space knowing how I perform and my ability to push through is on me. (yep, again, like karate!)

I registered for the 2023 Boston Marathon (Monday, April 17th) last week. Even though I qualified for Boston with my running time, this does not guarantee I will get in. Based on my time and coming in 8 minutes under my BQ time, I should be good but am awaiting confirmation before getting too excited.

IF I do get in, this will be my second time running Boston. My first in 2019 while a great experience was the worst year for weather on record; sideways rain and ice pelts, wind, running through deep puddles and far less people out on the course spectating and cheering. While it was very difficult it was also cathartic in running the historical course while mother nature kept punching me in the face.

Fingers crossed I get in and if so, 2023 is shaping up to be a wonderful year of new achievements and experiences!

My current Challenge progress as of December 24, 2024.

  1. Some sources say it was like 5 people watching the race in 2019.
I have high respect, sir. Running is not my strong suit and making the cut for Boston is awesome.
