I was off work last week. After an exceptionally busy holiday season which spilled over into the new year, it was much needed. I strive to be a very active person and so building in rest can be quite difficult. It’s important for every person to get adequate rest, not just adequate sleep. I have heard before that people have both active and resting energy. In today’s busy lifestyle, active energy is mainly what is nourished. It is also important to nourish our resting energy. Our bodies require it. Taking a break from daily duties or social interactions to rest our minds. Taking time out for meditation to rest our spirits. Not exercising and eating healthy to rest our bodies. This is just as important as “getting things done”, exercise, and keeping up with social events. We forget how important it is to rest because we are constantly on the move. The problem is, if we keep moving, our bodies don’t even know how to rest appropriately. Medically, this can lead to high blood pressure, straining of our hearts, and anxiety. I was reminded of how beneficial true rest can be. I have to remember to build in rest days from time to time. It is paramount to longevity in our lives.
