I was recently talking with my dad about how frustrating it is sometimes trying to maintain relationships/friendships with people who don’t seem to put in as much effort as I do. This can be disheartening and causes me to hold a grudge against a friend which is never good for anyone. He said “well, in order to keep a friend, you have to be a friend”. This struck me more than I anticipated. It’s essentially the golden rule: treat others as you would want to be treated. Even though someone may be less than a friend to you or downright “not being cool”, you should still treat them with love and respect. Sometimes people are jaded by hard times and don’t mean at all to be difficult. We have to be understanding and there for people we care about no matter what. It’s what I would hope someone would do for me if the roles were reversed.
