Building Heart

As I continue my training, I can feel strength returning to my body. My first goal in terms of physical training is building endurance and stamina. Forcing myself to walk longer, and then jog miles a day, I’m seeing my endurance grow bit by bit and it’s encouraging.

Building heart may be the most difficult challenge this year, outside the obvious. As I learned very early during white belt training, particularly when grappling for the first time – being utterly exhausted and pinned down often feels like drowning. That brings, at least in the moment, a mortal dread and powerlessness – one I’ve felt in real moments of fear in life, and in nightmares. It’s this state I fear the most in combat, as its tougher than any opponent I have faced.

The stronger and more resilient I become physically, the stronger my will becomes also. While doing pushups, jogging, and sparring will get me part of the way there, I aim to cultivate more heart; more mental strength to stand against my fear and fight it courageously.

My current Challenge progress as of January 22, 2025.

  1. Well said. Sometimes our inner thoughts are the most challenging. Recognizing it is the first step in overcoming it. You already have the drive and determination to not give up. Keep it up, buddy!

  2. I think fear is normal. I experienced it during the black belt challenge. It can help to motivate you to practice and improve. You can just keep on working towards that goal and face that fear.
