Sparring

I’ve actually been impressed with how far I’ve come in regards to being comfortable sparring. I have found that I truly do enjoy it. With each round, I am finding that I’m less anxious, gain more stamina, and think clearer. It has almost become a game of chess: seeing your opponents moves and countering as appropriate. In reading The Book of Five Rings, it makes sense to break down the basics of sparring. Knowing your opponent’s next move is crucial. I find myself “seeing” into an opponents mind and being able to anticipate an attack so that I am able to react in a way that gives me the upper hand. The same goes for rolling, or floor work. By slowing things down in both situations, it has become almost second nature to plan and act accordingly. I find myself enjoying it the more I do it and I can see positive results. All this is thanks to practice and repetition. As I am enrolled in my first out of school tournament on May 4th, I am excited to see how I will fare. It’s getting fun where it was stressful and taxing before.

  1. That’s awesome that sparring is becoming easier and enjoyable for you. I wish I felt the same. It is the most challenging part of this test for me. I can at least say I can take the hard hits and continue on. I hope with practice I can get better. I look forward to watching you at the tournament.
