Last thursday I received the black stripe on my belt. This means that I am now officially doing my black belt test. It feels crazy to see how far I have progressed since I began karate back in 2016. Then I was some 8 year old kid who wanted to learn some self defense, and now I just finished my junior year of high school and am working on my black belt test. When I was 8, I wasn’t really thinking about achieving the high ranks. I feel like this kind of mindset is the best way to look at progression in anything. If you want to progress in something you have to first, have motivation, and then enjoy the process. If you don’t enjoy the process in learning something, then it starts feeling like busy work, which kills any sort of motivation you originally had. This is one of the reasons why most new years resolutions die within the first month. People get too focused on their end goal and forget that progression is a long process. Here I am, 8 years later, halfway through my black belt test. It hasn’t really felt like its taken 8 years to get to this point.

My current Challenge progress as of December 23, 2024.

  1. Congratulations on getting your black stripe. You are right about enjoying the process. It is not always about the end goal but the process and steps to reach that end goal.
