First Tournament

Yesterday, I attended my first karate tournament. It was the Gold Rush Tournament sponsored by sensei Bennetti’s dojo. It was a great experience. I was very nervous the entire day but seeing the entire production of it was impressive. It was great to experience it with friends from the dojo and make new friends from other dojos. I ended up competing in kata, point sparring, and continuous sparring. I ended up placing 3rd in kata and 2nd in continuous sparring but I still feel there were a lot of things I could have improved on. I did not foresee the challenges of performing on a big stage such as that. Knowing that everyone was likely anxious as I was helped me to realize that we were all in the same boat. Although I had hoped I would have performed better, I learned a great deal about what I should improve on. I definitely plan to try it again and enact changes the next time. Overall, it was a great building experience and I’m thankful I took part in it. Congrats to all who took part and did a great job.

  1. You did well in your first tournament. Some tournaments I don’t even place. Every tournament is different. There is always something new to learn at each one. There are more to come this year.
