Week 54 – Dirk Herfurth

The end of the year is always a busy time, especially if you work in logistics like I do. It’s physical inventory time, which means long days and long hours of counting, sorting, and organizing. And to make matters even more challenging, I have to spend a lot of time in the freezer (-20 Celsius!) doing inventory of frozen goods.

Despite the long hours and challenging conditions, I’ve been making sure to meet up with David san for practice at the dojo during the break. We are running through all eight empty hands katas, as well as the two bo and two sai katas. After that we practice weapons kumite and finish with some sparring rounds.

There are only two more weeks of left until our test on January 13th. I have to say the uptick in practice is taking its toll. My knees hurt and my half-professional opinion diagnosed Runner Knees.

Cure for it is R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation). Well, no can do! I have to get more sparring rounds in as I am super close to my needed 1,000; katas need some polishing too. However, I know that I have to put some rest in as well to not gas out before the test night.

My current Challenge progress as of May 19, 2024.
