Learning To Teach

I recently just started teaching a morning karate class on Monday and Wednesday from 11:10 to 12 pm.  This is a new experience for me.  I have never taught a full class before.  In regular classes I have helped new students with what they are learning for portions in class.  It is usually one on one or just two or three people.  Those lessons are very short for only a few minutes out of class.  This is a full fifty minute class.  I prepare what I want to teach before class.  It is hard for me to be the center of attention.  I have always been a follower not a leader.  Now I am the leader.  I am doing something out of my comfort zone.  It is a tremendous growing experience.  I try to know what I am teaching very well.  I try to be able to answer questions to the best of my knowledge.  If I don’t know something I say I don’t know but I will find out the answer for them later.  It is getting easier to lead the class.  The more I do it the better I hope to improve.  I see the students learning more each class.  I am also learning with them.

My current Challenge progress as of January 6, 2025.

  1. @elan, Teaching is going to make you a much better martial artist. And, like you have alluded to, you will continue to learn a lot about yourself. I have seen you take notes on the topics you plan to cover. We know that your heart is in the right place.

  2. Elan, as a teacher you will stretch. and grow. and learn. and succeed. Figuring out how to teach helps you learn to see the things you know through the eye of your students, and that ability will help you grow. Kudos for taking on this challenge.

  3. You have so many critical elements of being a good teacher! Preparing thoughtfully for class, answering questions to the best of your knowledge but admitting when you don’t know, realizing that you are always learning alongside your students… AWESOME! It’s great to read how you are pushing yourself outside your comfort zone, and thriving at it! ❤️
