Today we got to experience training with Sensei Ray. He is a black belt in sabaki which is a martial arts focused on channeling power. It is very useful if you are facing a larger opponent than yourself because you can use their force and momentum against them. The 2 hour seminar we mainly focused on close range drills that we normally practice in class but with Sensei Ray we got to go into more depth of each move with a partner. There were a number of grabs, sweeps, and moves to unbalance our opponent that we practiced. Each of the moves had a Japanese name and I wish I could remember them so I could identify them easier. Anytime a special guest comes to visit our dojo I always love to take the time to learn from them because they will always have something new to teach us that we wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to learn in our dojo. I would like to thank Sensei Ray for coming to our dojo and teaching this special seminar. I really can’t wait until the next time he comes back to teach so I can learn even more from him.
