Integrating the Ego: Lessons from 'Ego is the Enemy' and the Martial Arts

A good self-improvement book is grounded in core principles and makes an impact. Impact is the key word I’m throwing out to y’all. You know what else makes an impact? A gut punch and a kick in the rear. A mem…

The sparring portion of the test is there for two reasons: 1) to make sure no one gets a black-belt from me that hasn’t for damn sure gotten a fair amount of hard, on the mat training time in and 2) to force you to connect with your fellow candidates during the test. It’s the only portion of the test that directly requires you to work with others on a consistent basis and is a good reminder that martial arts learning is best done with partners.

So exciting! Your body will acclimate to the push-ups and sit-ups in time. Ironically, it’s when they start to become easier that they start to become easier to forget.

    The Beginning Of The Journey

Wow! I am still amazed that I am qualified to be a black belt candidate. I started karate many years ago because my son was doing it. I thought it would be good to have a similar activity that we could share and do…

Elan-San, your dedication and consistency to your training is what got you where you are in karate. This trait of perseverance will serve you well in this test!
