Public Speaking

I was asked to give a presentation today about medical mission trips I’ve been on over the years which I feel was an honor. The problem: I cannot publicly speak well. The anticipation drives me nuts and I get extremely nervous. I get this same way even with demonstrating kata in class. I just get in my own head and lock up. I tried closing my eyes and deep breathing prior, even took a short walk outside of the room. By the time it was my turn to go I actually thought I was going to pass out, my heart was pounding. But after about 20 seconds of talking, I was able to calm down and got through it. Ultimately, the presentation went very well but I would like to better manage my performance anxiety. I do know that lack of sleep and coffee makes it worse so maybe I’ll start there.

My current Challenge progress as of May 19, 2024.

  1. That is good that you were able to finish the presentation. Public speaking is always difficult. I think the more you do it the better you will get at it. I felt very nervous teaching the karate class. It is getting easier the longer I do it. Sometimes I make mistakes and that is okay. I just continue on and say I have a correction.
