The kata that I have chosen to do 1000 times is Chinto. I have a few reasons for picking this kata. The main reason being that I like how challenging it is because of the length and the double jump kick. I remember when I first began training, I would watch all of the older kids preform Chinto and thought it was the coolest thing ever. When I became a brown belt and began learning this kata, I was SO excited. Little yellow belt me didn’t realize how complex this kata really was. I just saw the jump kick and wanted to learn it immediately. Now that I have been working on Chinto for about 2.5 years, I have found that it’s helped me in other aspects of my training. The little details in the punches or in a horse stance have elevated my skills in sparring, for example. Doing Chinto everyday has been challenging, but I am already seeing a difference in my performance!
Attached is a YouTube link of my most recent Chinto Kata.

  1. Nice job! I’m glad you’re enjoying the kata you chose. You mentioned that you began learning this as a brown belt. At my first dojo, we learned this as a blue belt (if I recall correctly). It’s really interesting how alike and yet how different Isshinryu can be from one school to another. I hope you continue to enjoy doing all those jump kicks this year!

  2. Looking good Elinor-San! In your progression toward 1000 reps, you’re going to notice so many small adjustments to make. Those small improvements add up to a next-level kata. It’s those invisible things that many practitioners never get because they don’t put this kind of work in.
