This week I started work at the Elevate summer camp program hosted by our dojo. Needless to say it was a fun but tiring week. Being able to see some of the kids that I’ve worked with before was a real joy and walking in on the first day and hearing them go “IT’S COACH LUCAS!” made me smile ear to ear. They do it everyday when I walk into the dojo, it truly warms my heart more than this summer heat. For this first week I was on park duty, meaning I go to East Portal Park with the 3 groups of kids every day. It is a lot of walking but I did the math and it turns out it is just over two and a half miles, so that means while working I get my black belt miles in. Working and playing with the kids is really fun and I bet having someone a little closer to their age makes them happy. Out of the 3 groups of kids my favorite to work with are the older ones, not only do they listen better, but I’ve known a lot of them for a long time so they are familiar with what I do and how I teach. Overall, this first week was a nice introduction to the next few I will be working, and it was nice being able to see the kids I haven’t seen in a while.
