Self Defense Class

A couple of weeks ago, I got a message from a friend that I haven’t seen for almost two years now. She used to train at the dojo when I was in middle school, but she quit a few years ago. She was reaching out to me to see if I could help her out by leading a women’s defense class for her National Charity League class. I jumped on the offer to help out with it. I was only given about 20 minutes to run the class, which wasn’t a whole lot of time, but I think that I filled it pretty well. I talked about my experiences over the last eight years of my training and how, as a woman, self-defense moves are important for me to know. I also got to talk a little bit about my black belt training. I then went on to teach the girls in the class some wrist escapes. I have always thought that, as a woman, wrist escapes are some of the most important self-defense moves for us to know. I went over how to do three different wrist escapes. It was really nice to get to share my karate knowledge with others. I have been lucky enough that in all of my years of training, I have never had to actually use any of the moves that I know in the real world. It’s really nice to get to share these moves with others so that other girls know how to defend themselves if they ever get into a situation where they would need to. If I were given more time, then there are a lot of other things that I would have loved to go over, but that being said, I was extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to share some of these moves with others.

  1. That is awesome you shared self defense wrist escapes. It is a very important movement in self defense so they cannot be taken away. I hope they remember it if they ever have to protect themselves. Sharing your knowledge can help people who want to learn.

  2. You really took the ball and ran with this! Thank you for spreading our karate out into the community and teaching self-defense! Being able to host a class like this on short notice is a testament to your understanding of the techniques and to your many hours of participating in similar classes that we have hosted over the years. Nicely done Olivia-San!
